Today, September 8, 2024, is National 988 Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about suicide prevention and reminding everyone of the vital resources available for mental health support. The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is a free, confidential service providing 24/7 support for anyone in emotional distress or facing a mental health crisis.
As a certified Grief Coach and Mental Health First Aider, I want to highlight how grief can impact those navigating life after a loss and offer affirmations to support healing and resilience.
Grief is a complex, often overwhelming process that affects not only our emotions but our thoughts and actions as well. Those grieving after a loss may experience a wide range of emotions, from deep sadness and despair to guilt and harmful thoughts. These feelings are normal, but they can sometimes lead to a dangerous spiral, especially if individuals believe they should have done something differently to prevent the loss or feel stuck in their sorrow.
It’s important to remember that while grief is a natural response to loss, it is possible to heal from its trauma. Here are some affirmations from the "I Am" app to help navigate these difficult feelings:
- Instead of holding on to what I could have done, I am taking action to do what I can do now. This affirmation encourages a shift in focus from the past to the present, empowering you to take steps toward healing.
- I am confident things are working out even if I'm struggling right now. This reinforces the idea that challenges are part of the journey, but progress is still being made.
- I can overcome this. Remind yourself that you have the strength to move through the pain and emerge on the other side.
- It is possible to heal from the trauma of grief. This affirmation helps build hope that healing is attainable, even if it feels distant.
If you or someone you know is struggling with grief or experiencing suicidal thoughts, please remember you are not alone. Reach out for support by dialing 988 for the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. Trained professionals are ready to listen and provide the help you need. Your life matters, and there is always hope for a brighter tomorrow.
Stay strong, and take care of your mental health.
